Back of Her Head
b
The two photographic works in this show both include the depiction of the back of a woman’s head. This echoes an ongoing series of paintings done over the last ten years. My interest in the subject stems from the two divergent conditions of the ‘self’ and ‘to look at’. The self or sense of self, of being, is undeveloped, oceanic, and almost still dedifferentiated, while ‘looking at’ is the opposite. In this condition the subject is objectified, totally differentiated, assessed and judged by a complex of cultural and social codes. This relationship of opposites is what I attempt to construct in my work.
